Cold Moon Arborist Walk with NYC Parks’ John Kilcullen

We closed out our last Nature Walk of 2025 with a very special nighttime tree walk under the last full moon of 2025 - the Cold Moon.

ISA Certified Arborist and Administrator, Staten Island South Shore Parks, John Kilcullen returned for a tree tour of our beautiful park. In 2023, John inaugurated our Nature Walks tree series with a brisk fall tree walk.

John led a walk with over 65 participants (our biggest to date) and showcased a wide variety of our park’s amazing trees, including our ash tree, award-winning eastern redbud, and our London plane trees, which make up the park’s beautiful tree canopy.

John also touched on the park’s history, citing the park's use and the composition of tree planting throughout its 100+-year history. The blustery winter walk was bolstered by John’s tree and park trivia, which yielded free prizes for some participants.

John discussed managing a mulching project to protect our trees from external decomposition, which will improve soil health and benefit our beautiful trees.
